Whether you’re looking for the perfect destination for a fall-themed family outing or just the perfect autumn photo for your dog’s Instagram, here are more than 30 dog-friendly farms in Ontario.
What activities are available at each location – apple-picking, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, etc. – as well as any entry fees, days they’re open, and accessibility information has been included. Links to each farm’s website, Instagram account and Facebook page are provided. Checking these is the easiest way to check their specific hours, what is currently available for pick-your-own harvesting, and upcoming events.
IMPORTANT: Please note that all farms in this list require that your dog be kept on leash throughout your visit. Don’t forget to bring poop bags and clean up after your pets!
All of the locations listed have a farm store or market where you can buy their produce and/or other goodies. In cases where the store is indoors, your dog may not be allowed inside and it may be helpful to bring a friend or family member who can stay with your pet while you make your purchases.

Tips for Visiting Dog-friendly Farms
Keeping your dog on a leash and picking up after them are essential to keeping farms open to pets for years to come, so don't forget to be respectful of the boundaries in place and don't forget to bring some poop bags!
It is also a great idea to bring:
- Water for your dog (and a bowl for them to drink from).
- Treats for your dog - Many farms do not allow you to bring in your own "outside" food, but dog treats are generally excluded from that rule if the farm is pet-friendly. Treats will come in handy in the event that the farm is crowded, there are farm animals such as chickens wandering around, or your dog gets away from you and you need to lure them back. Take the opportunity to practice your training and help build your dog's focus.
- A rag, cloth or wipes for your dog's paws - I usually have some wipes or a small towel handy in my car. Sable doesn't seek out puddles and mud, and sometimes avoids getting her paws wet or dirty, but when we're in a new place she's usually too excited to worry about keeping her paws clean. You know your dog best -- and how clean you want to keep your car.
- Good shoes or boots - Don't forget you're visiting a working farm that might be muddy, especially if you plan to pick-your-own pumpkins, fruit or flowers.
- A camera - Your phone is great, but farms often have beautiful photo opportunities that you may want a real camera for. I was very glad to have my DSLR handy at each of the six dog-friendly farms that Sable and I visited in 2021. If you want to have professional pet or family photos done at a farm, be sure to check their website first -- while they all welcome professional photographers, some charge an additional fee.
- A friend - Visits by yourself are totally doable, but it can be fun and helpful to have someone with you. For example, it won't be very easy if you need to use a portable toilet when you're alone with your dog, since they won't fit inside with you. Plus, some of the farm stores/markets are indoors and do not allow dogs inside the buildings, which means someone will need to stay with your pet while you make any purchases. I haven't run into any problems taking Sable to farms by myself, but outings are often a little easier when my partner comes with us.
If your dog is nervous or reactive but you still want to visit a farm with them...
- Try to go during less busy times such as weekdays or early on weekend mornings.
- Try visiting one of the options with less activities on offer, such as one of the apple-picking orchards that allows dogs down the rows or a pumpkin patch that allows dogs in the field. Farms that offer play areas, many activities and weekend events are generally much busier and will be much more challenging for your dog.
- Always be mindful of your surroundings and how far away you are from other guests, especially those who brought children or their own dogs.
- Don't be afraid to communicate with people to let them know that your dog is shy, scared, or otherwise not friendly with strangers -- it is better to be clear and upfront than to allow your dog to get too stressed in a public place.
- Remember, it is okay to remove your dog from a situation and take them to a quiet area, or out of the farm altogether if it ends up stressing them too much! We live and we learn.
- Bring treats to reinforce good behaviour.
- You know your dog best; think about what will help their visit be a success. Consider having soothing items in the car that work at home, such as their favourite blanket or a chew toy they can enjoy as a break. Alternatively, they may be calmer if they have a familiar dog friend with them who can reassure them that strangers don't need to be growled at.
Tips for Taking Great Photos of Your Dog
If the farm has one, start with a forest trail or nature walk. The trails tend to be quite nice but not that uniquely exciting for us humans, so you may overlook this feature at first. But they're a great way to start your visit with your dog. The walk will help burn off any initial over-excitement, which will help them stay calmer, sit still more easily, and maybe even smile or have their tongue out for your photos.
Take some shots at each photo station. Almost every dog-friendly farm in this list has spaces staged for photo backdrops. Even if some don't seem as interesting or if you have a similar photo already from somewhere else, practice getting your dog to sit or lay down and snap a few pictures. I often get some of my favourite photos of Sable in spots I don't expect to be my favourites! You never know when your dog is going to make an extra cute face, and taking more photos of them gives them more practice with commands like sit, lie down, stay, focus/look at me, etc.
Bring 2+ different kinds of treats, or even a small squeaky toy. I usually pack a small Ziploc bag or reusable container with a few different small treats to help keep Sable interested since she's not very food motivated and will become disinterested if all she gets are the same little training treats over and over. Pet photographers often use squeaky toys as well to help draw a dog's attention.
Don't stress about getting "the perfect shot." Don't forget you're out to have fun with your dog! You're bound to get at least one good photo from the day, so focus on making great memories. Remember that the happier and more relaxed you are, the easier it is for your dog to be happy and relaxed, too (which will also help get better pictures).

We really enjoyed picking our own flowers at this dog-friendly farm, and loved the variety available, including a wildflower section!
The pumpkin patch and the selection of fresh vegetables for sale also looked great.
Laura's Farm Stand is a great stop for a walk on your way up north. Although it doesn't have washrooms on-site, its proximity to Thornton and Barrie means there are options for bathrooms, coffee, food and gas very close by.
